Dear all JC students taking H2 Math (syllabus 9758) in Singapore,
Here is a list of some of the most important functions of the graphing calculator (TI-84) that you must know before you sit for your School Promotional Exams and the A Level examinations.
Unfortunately, these functions are not available on your ordinary scientific calculators used during your O level days.
1. How to key in piecewise function for graph sketching
2. How to sketch the 3 types of conics: circle, ellipse and hyperbola, as well as obtaining their vertices on the GC.
3. How to use the graph and table in the GC to solve mathematical equations which cannot be solved manually.
4. How to solve polynomial equations up to order of 10.
5. How to solve simultaneous equations involving more than 2 unknowns or 2 equations.
This is especially important if you want to solve for the equation of line of intersection between 2 planes, under the topic of vectors.
6. How to find the differential value for a specific value of x.
7. How to solve for definite integral values.
8. How to solve for probability values using binompdf, binomcdf and normalcdf functions in the GC
9. How to perform hypothesis test and data that you have to be careful about while keying in.
10. How to obtain a scatter diagram, the product moment correlation coefficient and the equation of regression line for the topic of correlation and regression.

What should I do if I am unsure or do not know many of the important functions of the GC?
My advice is to strongly encourage you to seek help from an experienced private tutor!
This is because it is way too time consuming to figure things out purely on your own. Also, you may create undue stress for yourself when you face difficulties while figuring things out. Besides that, you simply have too many things on your plate: CCA commitments, many other topics and subjects that you have to study for. Moreover, there may still be some hidden functions of the GC that you may not necessarily be able to discover on your own, but are essential for the A level H2 Math examinations.
To add on, Math Tutors in your school may not necessarily guide you step by step because there is an emphasis on independent learning in the Junior Colleges. Thus, they may simply ask you to refer to the screenshots shown in your lecture notes.
I am Mr Mitch Peh, a former MOE JC lecturer with more than 10 years of teaching experience in H2 Math. I conduct both private 1 to 1 coaching and small group lessons for H2 Math. During my lessons, I not only provide step by step guidance on how to use the GC for my students, I also identify for you the different types of questions for each H2 Math topic that you must be able to conquer, which topics have higher weightage that you must focus on, what is likely to come out for this year’s A Level examinations based on past year trends etc.
On top of that, I provide coaching for A Level Physics, Chemistry and Economics as well.
If you are interested to sign up for lessons with me, you can feel free to contact me at 96517737. I only have limited number of slots each year.
